A small, compact, and user-friendly device. When used with the Amp 1, it offers virtually unlimited sound possibilities.
The Boss MS-3 competed directly with a Line 6 HX Effects unit. The unit should have at least 2 programmable loops, the ability to control at least 2 amplifiers, support MIDI, and deliver reasonable effects. There weren't many options available. However, both devices could remain: the "winner" would use a larger system (with DigiWhammy, 2x Eventide H9, Korg SDD 300, Boss OD-200, and Aphex Guitar Exciter, 2 expression pedals, all connected to a Laney IRT-Head), while the "loser" could focus on the smaller unit with 1x expression pedal, EHX Crayon, and Blackstar HT Metal Combo. The Line 6 unit was ultimately chosen, so the Boss is now connected to the smaller system. The MS-3 has some strengths: loops and amplifier control, sending and receiving MIDI commands from an expression pedal. If you get used to the Boss/Roland logic, you can achieve 5-6 presets in an hour that sound quite acceptable. But not much more. "Not bad" and "quite okay" are the key words here. It's a good working tool, but the excitement is different.
