When Chopin titled his Opus 23 " Ballade " in the mid-1830s, he established the piano ballad as a new musical genre, which was taken up again and again by his successors, for example B. by Brahms, Liszt and Grieg. The idea of translating a fictional, dramatic, mystical event into sounds was particularly close to the romantic Schumann. He expressed his enthusiasm about this work: "I have a new Ballade from Chopin. It seems to me to be his most ingenious (not most ingenious) work." The individual edition is taken from the recently revised edition of the "Balladen" (HN 862).
