Task: Connect the Marshall JMP-1 tube preamp directly to the Focusrite Scarlett interface and play audio into the computer. The old unit even has a speaker simulation, but the sound is quite modest (it was state-of-the-art 20 years ago). I also connected an IR cab (and a ground loop isolator, because the Marshall hums...) and started playing. There were some initial frustrations. The first few presets are very quiet, so you have to increase the gain on the Scarlett. From preset 5 or 6, the sound becomes much louder, and my Scarlett (and my ears) start to overheat; so I have to reduce the gain again. The software is difficult to convince to load the presets from the device (you have to unplug and replug the USB and power cables several times). After some practice, I can get my sounds and also load IRs from Celestion, etc. You can further refine the many different cab sounds by using 3-axis microphone positioning and the corresponding IRs (be careful, they have very significant differences in loudness). This allows you to create exciting sounds. After a few hours of tweaking, I had 5 presets that made the old Marshall sound great directly into the mixing console. If you can tolerate the somewhat clunky controls, you will be rewarded with good sound.
