I'm not a big fan of flanging, but if I need a flanger for some songs or parts of songs, it needs to sound good. I have 2 other flangers - the Boss BF-3 and the TC Electronic Vortex Flanger (I used to have a Starlight v2 Flanger from Subdecay. That was a nice one, but not exactly a classic. It went much further). The two I just mentioned, the BF-3 and the Vorex, are digital and they have very brittle sounds. They also seem to emphasize high end treble and take away from the guitar's natural frequencies. I always think something is wrong with my jumper cables when I use the Vortex. Something sounds so bad about it that it seems like something is wrong. I can describe it as dinky, thin, deflated. That's why I got the Thunderstorm. I wanted the sound to be pristine, and that's exactly what it does. It really keeps the frequency range of my guitar intact and works on top of it. The sound it imparts is much smoother than the digital flangers I have, and brings me back to the 80's and the flangers I had at the time - an Ibanez FL-9 and a Boss BF-2. The Ibanez was too much flange. I'm not sure if I could even hear my guitar chords under the flanging at times. And the Boss BF-2 is probably perfect for the classic flanging effect. But since I don't have one around, I can't imagine that the BF-2 could sound as good as the Thunderstorm. The Thunderstorm sounds so incredibly rich and deep. It's a no brainer at this price point, and I couldn't be happier with it. A couple of strange things that are cosmetic - the pedal is slightly bigger than a boss pedal, which has complicated my pedal board. And the knobs are so big that I can't see the words to know what they are for (ex - Rate, Depth...). But that's the kind of thing that will make it stand apart from the rest of them in the long run, and in no way does it take away from how great this flanger sounds.
