The Shure SM58 unidirectional (cardioid) dynamic vocal microphone is designed for professional vocal use in live performance, sound reinforcement, and studio recording. A highly effective, built-in, spherical filter minimizes wind and breath "pop" noise. A cardioid pickup pattern isolates the main sound source while minimizing unwanted background noise. Sometimes this classic piece is the only choice. After all these years, it's still the go-to vocal mic internationally; especially for live vocals. In the studio, sometimes a 58 is the best choice even given high end options; (it's inexpensive, hard to distort, and the EQ compliments many voices.) I feel the same way about the SM57's, especially for tomtom's.
