Ich hatte das Focusrite 18i20 4th Generation als Ersatz für ein Behringer UMC 1820 bestellt, weil dies meinen Anforderungen besser entsprach. Man investiert mehr, bekommt aber auch ein excellentes Preis-/Leistungsverhältnis beim Focusrite. Das Focusrite hat die Wandler der deutlich teureren RedNet-Serie drin, und das war mein Kaufkriterium.

Der Klang ist entsprechend sehr gut, es ist ein Gerät, bei dem man das, was man im Monitoring hört, auch im Endergebnis bei der Aufnahme geliefert bekommt, wenn nicht sogar noch etwas besser. Für mich sind die Aufnahmen sehr detailliert aufgelöst und klar in der Wiedergabe, es gibt für mich nichts zu beanstanden.

Die Ausstattungsliste macht es einem zusammen mit der Software-Anbindung sehr leicht, schnell sehr gute Ergebnisse im Recording zu erzielen. Die Umschaltungen von den verschiedenen Quellen gehen einfach und problemlos.

Die Mikrofon-Vorverstärker (Preamps)  sind mit 69 db Gain sehr gut und bei entsprechender Pegelstellung sehr rauscharm. Die Air-1 und -2 Stellungen (auch für Line-Eingänge nutzbar) waren ebenfalls ein Kaufkriterium für mich, sie sind eine sehr nützliche Ergänzung, da sie den Klang in den Höhen nach vorne bringen oder den Klang auch 'breiter' werden lassen.

Man sollte allderings beachten, das nur 2 Kanäle für das Loopback der Aufnahme vom Computer zum Gerät per Kabel zur Verfügung stehen (zwingend auf den Ausgangs-Kanälen 9 und 10), z.B. für weitere Klangbearbeitungen durch externe Effektgeräte, die dann zeitgleich wieder über das Gerät in den Computer zurück aufgenommen werden können. Das funktioniert problemlos. Ausserdem kann man von hier aus über das Routing die verbleibenden Kanäle parrallel ansteuern (Splitting).
