the way the noise gate operates is by only going 'on' is when it detects a guitar signal;  the guitar signal and the gated signal are separated from each other (2 inputs and 2 outputs), the gate therefore gets a really clean signal to trigger the gate. 
This results in a gate which knows when it needs to work or when to let the signal go through and will give you a much more natural sound in comparison with regular noise gates.
it is simple to use and even if it would have been twice  as expensive it would still have been excellent value for money
