Behringer 1273 & 676 Preamps: Real Analog Drum Recording Session

Behringer 1273 & 676 Preamps: Real Analog Drum Recording Session
How good can an affordable analog recording chain sound?

In our latest MusiX studio session, we put the new

Behringer 1273 Mic Preamp
and
Behringer 676 Tube Compressor / Mic Preamp
to the test in a real recording environment. Together with a full Behringer microphone setup, we recorded drummer
Rafael Silva
performing a powerful live groove — capturing the drums exactly as they were played. No heavy processing. No artificial enhancement. Just performance, microphones, and analog tone.

Watch the Studio Session

Raw Energy, Natural Tone
Rafael delivers groove, dynamics, and raw energy, while our recording chain brings out the character of the preamps and microphones in a natural studio environment. The result: a drum recording with depth, punch, and clarity — straight from the source.

The Analog Signal Chain
At the heart of this session are two exciting additions to Behringer’s growing studio lineup.

Behringer 1273 Mic Preamp

The 1273 is inspired by classic British recording consoles known for shaping the sound of countless legendary albums.

It delivers:
  • rich harmonic saturation
  • punchy low-end response
  • musical midrange presence
This makes it a perfect preamp for drums, guitars, bass, and vocals, adding analog character without losing clarity.

Behringer 676 Tube Compressor / Mic Preamp

The 676 combines a tube microphone preamp with optical compression, creating a channel strip that adds warmth while keeping dynamics smooth and controlled.

Key highlights:
  • tube-driven tone
  • optical compressor for natural dynamics
  • classic analog signal path
This combination gives recordings a vintage-style vibe with modern reliability.

Full Behringer Drum Microphone Setup
To capture the entire drum kit, we used a complete Behringer microphone lineup:

Kick Drum

Behringer BA19A Kick Drum Microphone (Kick In)
Behringer C112 Dynamic Microphone (Kick Out)

Snare

Behringer SL75C Dynamic Instrument Microphone
Overheads

Behringer C‑2 Stereo Condenser Microphone Set

Toms & Room
Behringer B-2 Pro Dual Diaphragm Condenser Microphone

This setup captures both detail and room ambience, creating a drum sound that feels open, natural, and powerful.

Why Analog Still Matters
While digital tools dominate modern production, analog recording gear continues to offer something special: character.

Preamps like the 1273 and 676 shape the sound before it even reaches the recording interface. Instead of relying on plug-ins later, the tone is created directly at the source.

The result:
  • fuller drum transients
  • natural harmonic saturation
  • more musical dynamics
In this session, that character is clearly audible — even with minimal processing.

Honest Sound — Straight From the Studio

One of the most interesting aspects of this recording is how little processing was required. With the right microphones, a strong performance, and quality analog preamps, the drums already carry the punch, clarity, and warmth you hear in the final recording.Sometimes the best production choice is simply letting the instruments speak for themselves.
