The new DPA 5100 is an exceptional mobile surround microphone whose compact dimensions and ease of use do not come at the expense of its breathtaking sound quality. The versatile 5100 is ideal for creating immersive surround atmospheres for HDTV productions and requires no additional signal processing. It is installed on a camera or microphone stand, flown or simply held over a handle. The microphone is extremely light and mobile and surprisingly robust, so that it can easily withstand harsh weather conditions. A completely self-contained plug-and-play solution for 5.1 recording, the 5100 uses five miniature pressure receivers that are extremely insensitive to wind and mechanical noise while maintaining low distortion, highly consistent low frequency response and enormous dynamic range exhibit. The required channel separation and directional effect is achieved through a combination of the proprietary DPA technology DiPMic (Directional Pressure Microphone), which works with interference tubes on the L/C/R capsules, and the use of acoustic 'baffles' which ensure correct level ratios between the discrete analog outputs. The 5100 's three front microphones are arranged coincidentally in time to eliminate comb filter effects and ensure superior frequency response consistency when downmixing to stereo or mono. The rear microphones with standard omnidirectional characteristics, on the other hand, are arranged at an optimal distance from one another and from the front microphones in order to simulate particularly natural runtime differences. The LFE channel (.1) is formed from an L/R summation, which is then attenuated by 10 dB compared to the signal of the main channels according to the 5.1 format. As a result, DPA's innovative development approach achieves a rich, even and fully enveloping surround atmosphere that sets standards in coherence, channel separation and localization. The 5.1 output of the 5100 is on a multipin connector that carries all six channels in an electronically balanced form. A five-meter-long multicore cable supplied ends in six XLR-M connectors. If necessary, the center channel can be replaced with an external shotgun or lavalier microphone, which is connected via a built-in XLR-F socket - a particularly useful advantage for interviews and documentaries.
